Dawson Tree Care

We here at Dawson Tree Service are committed to improving our Clarkston community

by sharing in a tree care health management program with our Clarkston neighbors. We have three ISA Certified Arborists on staff to better assist you in the management of our most precious resource, Trees.

Recently our arborists have seen an increase in the number of target pests in the Clarkston area which include (but are not limited too) White Oak and Red Oak Wilt Vir.... Dutch Elm Disease,... Anthracnose ,... Cytospora Canker,... Powdery Mildew, ... Fire Blight....Emerald Ash Borer ...and most recenty a borer now attacking our hickorys as well as Oaks. in some cases we have seen the emergence of twolined Chestnut borer from Oaks in the Clarkston area. We are therefore recommending that you follow a more educated and informed approach in both the removal as well as trimming and general care of your Oak trees.

Cultural Control: Twolined chestnut borer larvae are sensitive to rapid drying of the host tissues. Removal of infested oaks during the summer promotes faster drying of the cambial tissue and can kill the developing larvae. It is critical to remove oaks after most egg laying has ended, but before most larvae have become third instars. In the Clarkston area and surrounding areas, best results occur when oaks are removed during mid-July. Somewhat earlier dates would apply further south. This approach eliminates the need to destroy the infested material quickly because few if any adults will ever emerge.

Inspection of your oak trees would best be conducted in late summer when heavily infested branches can be easily identified by foliage that has prematurely wilted. Pruning however should not take place before November as a general rule because of the risk from infection of Oak Wilt virus. Burn, chip, or bag the infested material before adults emerge. Proper removal of infested branches during the first year of infestation combined with cultural treatments to improve tree vigor, may allow some trees to survive. However, no treatment program can guarantee lifelong protection against future attack by twolined chestnut borer.

While some of our concerns are not new to the Clakston area, and to a lesser extent the Milford area, we have seen an increase in some target pests. Please inform your neighbors and contact us if we can be of assistance.

Note: If you plan on employing the services of another Tree Care Company make sure they have a qualified Arborist perform the work. A certified arborist will have an ISA certification card with his or her name engraved. If you plan on hiring someone else to save the higher cost usually associated with hiring a company which employs Certified Arborists, then please inform them as to the time frame that such work should be done.

Sincerely Dawosn Tree Care inc.
